Mission & Impact
The CitySprouts mission is to cultivate wonder for all children with hands-on learning through urban gardens.
Our innovative partnership with public school districts gives thousands of children on-going opportunities to learn from nature during their elementary education.
Our tuition-free summer and after school program for 11-14 year olds creates a community for young people to learn about their natural environment, engage in science and engineering through ecosystems and food systems, and explore their emerging identity as young adults.
CitySprouts’ impact is higher for children with little or no access to nature where they live. Our program helps level the learning field children with differing abilities and for English language learners.
“Our students have few places in the neighborhood to safely explore the natural world. Their families have one of the highest rates of food insecurity. Among our students, 65% are English language learners. These are a few of the reasons why we chose to partner with CitySprouts school garden program two years ago. Our school garden gives students hands-on science opportunities, exposure to healthy vegetables and food education and time to explore outdoors.” -Principal, Boston Public Schools
“Families love our garden. It is a strong selling point with prospective families and a great community builder. It has also brought our staff together through our shared commitment to an asset that contributes to who we are as a school.” -Principal, Boston Public Schools
